Planning Tips
Look for our Epic Trips (# 101 Mt. Erie Summit, #202 Trail 247 in ACFL, #204 Guemes Mountain Summit, #301 PNW National Scenic Trail). These and other Hard rated walks are special adventures lasting more than 3 hours and requiring a bit more stamina—but the views are worth it!
Downtown walks are shorter, flat, and usually on sidewalks. These are rated Easy and are great for a relaxed pace.
Understanding Walk Ratings
To help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, please choose walks that match your current fitness level and equipment.
• Easy: Shorter walks (1.5–2 hours) on relatively flat terrain. Many follow city sidewalks.
• Moderate: Mid-range walks (2–3 hours) with elevation gains of 300–1,000 feet, usually on well-graded trails.
• Hard: Longer adventures (3+ hours) with steeper grades and elevation gains over 1,000 feet. Expect rutted trails, narrower sections, and the need for good balance.
Please note: Weather and trail conditions can change quickly. Rain or mud may make a walk feel more challenging than its rating, so come prepared with sturdy footwear and appropriate layers.
Getting to Your Walk
Almost all outings take place on beautiful Fidalgo Island, with the exception of one walk in Deception Pass State Park and two on Guemes Island (requires ferry walk-on ticket). Please plan ahead using these approximate travel times from downtown Anacortes. Use Google Maps or your favorite map app for directions to starting points.
• Downtown starts: Easily reached on foot or with a very short drive
• Forest Lands, Washington Park, & Cap Sante: Plan for a 10–15 minute drive
• Deception Pass State Park, Sharpe Park: Plan for at least a 20-minute drive
A note on parking: Downtown parking usually is plentiful, but trailhead spaces can be limited. Carpooling with fellow walkers is highly encouraged.
Reminder: Parking at all Deception Pass Park trailheads requires a Discover Pass. Please be sure one is displayed before the walk begins.
